On a recent post on Instagram, someone asked me how to make shawarma “fit-fam” friendly.
If you think about it, shawarma doesn’t sound like something that isn’t fit-fam friendly, I mean its pretty much a wrap right? Well, wrong wrong wrong.
Nigerian shawarma especially is in a class of it’s own.
For this post, I will be using chicken shawarma for my breakdown.
Let’s break down the calories
Typical Ingredients for a Nigerian chicken shawarma
- Shawarma bread: per bread 200
- Grilled chicken: per 100g 240
- Hotdog or franks: per one 150 calories
- Cabbage/ veggies etc.: 60
Dressing
- Mayonnaise : per tablespoon : 95 calories
- Ketchup : 20 calories per tablespoon
When we break down how the average shawarma is made, here is the total
- 2 bread = 400 calories
- 200g chicken meat = 480 calories
- Veggies = 60 calories
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise + 2 tablespoons ketchup = 230 calories
- 1 sausage = 150 calories
Total Nigerian Shawarma wrap average calories = 1,320 calories.
If you use beef instead of chicken, the calories is even higher.
You do have more control if you are making it yourself at home but as always, make sure it fits within your goal before you consume it.
We discussed calories in other bread as well this week on Instagram. In this video, we have discussed shawarma bread and their relation to your weight loss goals.

I’m from Nigeria and I make shawarma commercially. I use just one bread per shawarma and around 100g of chicken. So I dunno what y’all talking ‘bout
I am in Togo and here we have only one bread per shawarma, around 100g chicken and no sausage (but a bit of fried potatoes). I wonder how big are shawarma in Nigeria.
